Introduction
Meet Kori Solomon, Founder of Convey, and learn why this Jamaican Sign Language learning initiative was created to make JSL more accessible, inclusive, and beginner-friendly through self-paced online and offline resources.
When I first began building Convey, I was not simply thinking about creating another website or learning resource. I was thinking about communication, access, and the many everyday moments where Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, and hearing Jamaicans are separated by a gap that should not be so difficult to cross.
My name is Kori Solomon, Founder of Convey. I am a Jamaican UI/UX Design Lead, product designer, accessibility advocate, and someone who believes deeply that design should help people feel seen, included, and empowered.
Convey was created out of a simple but powerful belief: more Jamaicans should have an accessible starting point for learning Jamaican Sign Language.
As I learned more about the needs of families, educators, students, and communities, I became especially interested in how self-paced learning could support people who want to begin their JSL journey but may not know where to start. For many hearing parents of Deaf children, teachers, students, and professionals, the desire to communicate is there. What is often missing is a beginner-friendly, culturally relevant resource that makes the first step feel possible.
That is where Convey comes in.
Through Convey, I am building online and offline learning tools that introduce people to the basics of Jamaican Sign Language in a structured, approachable, and respectful way. The website currently allows users to learn the JSL alphabet, count to ten, and type any word to see it represented through fingerspelling. But Convey is more than a digital platform. It is growing into a learning ecosystem that includes physical resources, future flashcards, read-along stories, classroom tools, and other inclusive learning experiences.
One of our proudest milestones so far is the Jamaican Sign Language Fingerspelling Workbook. This workbook was designed as a beginner-friendly activity book to help learners practise the JSL alphabet, numbers, and fingerspelling through guided exercises, puzzles, mazes, and visual learning activities.
It is ideal for parents, teachers, students, families, and anyone who wants to take their first step toward learning JSL.
Convey is not here to replace the Deaf community, Deaf educators, interpreters, or formal Jamaican Sign Language instruction. Instead, it is designed as a supportive starting point, created with respect for the Jamaican Deaf community and informed by collaboration, feedback, and a genuine desire to learn alongside those closest to the language and culture.
For me, this work is personal, purposeful, and deeply Jamaican. It brings together my background in design, my passion for accessibility, and my belief that innovation should serve people in practical and meaningful ways.
My hope is that Convey helps more families communicate, more classrooms become inclusive, more professionals serve with confidence, and more Jamaicans recognize that learning JSL is one way we can build a more connected society.
